Cathcart incident drives home horror of livestock crime

A farmer from Cathcart in the Eastern Cape found 18 gutted sheep carcasses hanging on his barbed wired fence last week.

It is reported that the intruders left only two sheep alive.

However, they had cut off the tendons on their hind legs preventing the animals from escaping.

According to a statement released by the Eastern Cape provincial management earlier this year, there has been a spike in stock theft and illegal transit of stock throughout the province. The latest police statistics show that stock theft in South Africa is on the rise with close to 30 000 cases recorded in the recent financial year.

The spokesperson for the Cathcart Police was not unavailable for comment. – Zoë van Rooyen
