Foot and mouth now confirmed in 10 locations

According to a latest report issued by the Directorate of Animal Health at the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, cases of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) have now been confirmed in 10 locations within the Limpopo province.
The affected properties include commercial cattle farms, a community farm, feedlots and associated abattoirs.
The latest outbreak of FMD was reported on a Limpopo cattle farm last month, with the South African government subsequently shutting down all livestock auctions as this creates an easy distribution point for the spread of disease.
Government, animal health structures and auctioneers have called on all livestock role players to act responsibly to limit the spread of FMD.
No cases have been reported in other provinces so far. – Zoë van Rooyen.
