Merger plans for state-owned airlines to be on Cabinet agenda soon

Cabinet seems set to approve plans to merge the country’s three state-owned airlines, South African Express Airways, Mango and South African Airways (SAA) as early as next week.

“At the moment the consolidation plan is being presented at the economic cluster and next week it will be submitted to Cabinet for a decision.

Thereafter, we will be able to decide on how much additional funding the airline will need, based on how the consolidation will be carried out,” said senior Department of Public Enterprises official, Edwin Besa.

This he said as he spoke to Parliament’s select committee on public enterprises yesterday.

It follows after Public Enterprises minister, Pravin Gordhan, announced government’s intention to merge the carriers in May this year.
