Tema Port was preparing for the arrival of its first vessel following the completion of its expansion project, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) announced yesterday.
The $1.5-billion project has expanded the port’s capacity to two million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit).
The construction project was carried out by Meridian Port Services (MPS) in collaboration with the China Harbour Engineering Company.
“Tema will not just open up Ghana to the world, it will also bring long-term and sustainable economic growth that creates more jobs,” said MPS CEO Mohammed Samara.
The first commercial vessel, the MV Cape Coast, is expected to arrive between July 3-5.
This will be the first test for the port’s marine piloting team.
