Increasing buy-in for off-grid solutions

Energy expert Ted Blom has called on the country to focus on off-grid solutions rather than Eskom’s revival.

This had already happened in the business environment, said Blom, with energy-intensive users finding their own solutions, as they could not rely on the government supply.

He said with Medupi and Kusile still not at full capacity and with no word on when the country’s Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) would be, available energy was a crisis in the country.

“It is also a fallacy that renewable power can replace fossil fuels. It is simply not suitable for energy-intensive users. “Economically the country can’t rely on the sun and the wind. So when the sun is not shining and the wind not blowing do we stop production?”

Blom said any attempts to save Eskom would have to start with ridding the organisation of corruption.

“If you want to save Eskom then you have to clean up the act first, then rid the debt, the overstaffing and the corrupt projects. Fact is there is a radical difference to the truth of what is happening there and the nonsense we are being fed.”
