Truck drivers to be ‘decisively’ dealt with

Transport minister Blade Nzimande has called on law enforcement agencies to arrest all protestors following a statement of intent by the National Truck Driver’s Association (NTDA) to shut down all national roads during the Easter weekend.
Nzimande has been reassured by cabinet’s security cluster that it is prepared to “deal decisively” with any disruptions.
This follows an earlier grievance hearing between the minister and leadership of the All Truck Drivers Foundation and the NTDA.
Nzimande said that he was under the impression that the matter had already been dealt with.
“It is disingenuous and disturbing that after numerous meetings which were followed by agreed recommendations between government and the NTDA, that today we were informed about this unfortunate development.”
Law enforcement officers have been tasked with identifying potential high volume routes.
According to the NTDA, the protests are an effort to get through to transporters who employ foreign drivers and “overlook the skill sets of South African citizens.”
