Sasol yesterday announced the opening of another coal mine in Mpumalanga – a venture that will create employment for an estimated 1 700 workers.
With an investment of R5.6 billion, Impumelelo Mine is set to process coal into high-value fuel and chemical products.
“The new mines are critical to securing coal supply to Sasol Secunda Synfuels Operations up to at least 2050,” said Sasol joint president and CEO, Bongani Nqwababa.
Impumelelo is one of three world-class mines constructed by Sasol in the last decade as part of its R14 billion mine replacement programme.
Investment was particularly targeted at technologically advanced measures to ensure employee safety.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mineral Resources Minister, Gwede Mantashe, said this was the fifth mine to open in the last 12 months – an indication of SA’s “attractiveness as an investment destination of choice”.
