Ro-ro totally gutted between Suez and Djibouti

The approximate location of the Al Fayrouz near Saudi Arabia’s Farasan Islands at the time of its destruction.

An on-board fire has totally destroyed a roll-on roll-off (ro-ro) vehicle carrier under way from Suez to Djibouti – but thanks to swift action from Saudi Arabian navy personnel and border guards there were no fatalities.

The Panama-flagged Al Fayrouz sent out a distress signal while it was 60 nautical miles off the Farasan Islands near Saudi’s coastal border with Yemen.

Reacting to the “mayday” call, the Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aqaba managed to save all 31 crew before the 6 257 gross tonnage vessel was completely gutted by the night-time blaze.

The Al Fayrouz was built in Germany in 1980 and was operated by Medmarine Shipping based on the Marshall Islands.

It’s not certain whether the 101-metre ro-ro was carrying any cargo at the time of its destruction.
