Zimbabwe appeals for $612m aid after Idai

The Zimbabwe government said on Tuesday that it needed $612 million for humanitarian assistance and the reconstruction of infrastructure after the destruction caused by Cyclone Idai.

Local government minister July Moyo said $155 million was needed for logistics and emergency communication while a further $292million for food and nutrition for an estimated 100 000 people who were hardest hit in Chimanimani.

$75 million is required for emergency shelter and $51 million for water sanitation and hygiene.

The remainder has been budgeted for the rebuilding of schools and hospitals.

The cyclone had also been a setback for the agricultural sector, said information minister Monica Mutsvangwa.

Government will need to import grain after an already poor harvest season.
