The maritime industry has agreed to support the introduction of new levies to boost the newly launched Maritime Fund, after reaching consensus at the SA Maritime Risk Workshop held in Durban last week.

Administered by the South African Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa), the fund will help to address and improve risk-related issues.

In addition, two emergency towing vessels will be positioned at strategic locations along the SA coastline.

These were among several issues raised for discussion during the two-day workshop hosted by Samsa.

Around 70 delegates from the public and private sectors attended the workshop.
