Fire-stricken vessel sinks off French coast

The Grande America.

The stricken 27 965-dwt Grande America, built in 1997, sank late yesterday off the Bay of Biscay, according to France’s Marine Nationale.

This after a fire which broke out on board the Grimaldi Lines’ combination roll-on/roll-off containership.

The fire started on Sunday night as the ship was under way in the Bay of Biscay during a voyage from Hamburg, Germany to Casablanca, Morocco. It was primarily located in cargo containers in the forward portion of the ship.

All 27 crew members were rescued and were largely unharmed.
