Serious moves to promote furniture manufacturing industry

The Department of Trade and Industry (dti) has put its money where its mouth is in the promotion of local manufacturing in the furniture industry.

Its annual Furniture Design Competition, the winner of which will be announced on Tuesday, forms part of the department’s Industrial Policy Action Plan (IPAP) to support and elevate the furniture manufacturing sector.

According to Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Bulelani Magwanishe, the competition identifies future design talent, raising the profile of furniture manufacturing in South Africa and growing the industry’s competitiveness by encouraging new product designs and differentiation.

“We have realised that furniture design is one area that is still very much in need of development and believe that once the concept of design is embraced in the industry, it will reinvent the way business is done,” Magwanishe added.

The competition presents great market opportunities for applicants, said finalist Nqobile Mthembu. “The amount of exposure that our company will receive from being placed on the country’s national map of furniture designers will be the huge benefit.”
