Grace Mugabe’s fledgling airline effectively grounded

Former Zimbabwean first lady Grace Mugabe’s fledgling airline – Zimbabwe Airways – has effectively been grounded after the minister of transport announced that the four aircraft purchased by the airline would now be incorporated in the national carrier’s fleet.

Minister of Transport, Biggie Matiza, told journalists at a post-cabinet press briefing earlier this week that Cabinet had approved the deal to incorporate the four Boeing 777s into Air Zimbabwe’s fleet.

“This is not a new acquisition, just a change of ownership,” he emphasised.

Air Zimbabwe reportedly has a debt of over US$300 million and has grounded most of its aircraft. Matiza insisted however that government was looking at a turnaround plan which involved initially strengthening domestic routes.
