WC oil exploration project could be a ‘game changer’

The Deepsea Scavanger rig has been deployed at Total’s Mossel Bay operation.

The deep sea rig operations by oil company Total Exploration & Production in the Western Cape could be a “game changer” for the oceans economy, according to the minister of mineral resources, Gwede Mantashe,

"If we can discover oil and gas here, that will be a game changer for the country in terms of the economy. We hope that we will discover oil so that we can reduce our dependence on imported crude oil,” he said after leading a delegation from the Department of Mineral Resources on a visit to the operation –  situated 180km off the shore of Mossel Bay – on Saturday.

"We will work with other government departments in giving the project all the support we can because we believe that it will help support a turnaround in our economy,” he said.

Last week, two industry sources close to the Total project were quoted by Reuters news agency as saying that the operation was “days away” from a significant find.
