Moz mulls more tollgates to fund bridge loan

Africa’s longest suspension bridge, the Maputo-Catembe Bridge.

With the first payment for the construction of the newly opened Maputo-Catembe Bridge due to the China Export Import Bank due early next year, the Mozambican government is considering adding new tollgates.

Mozambique Minister of Economy and Finance, Adriano Maleiane, said there was a tollgate on the bridge with plans to introduce three new tollgates for the connecting roads.

There seems to be a disconnect though as the tollgate management company, Maputo-Sul, is adamant that the revenue collected from the tollgates will be earmarked for maintenance of the bridge and not for repaying the loan.
