The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has developed an online application for learners and drivers licence applications, as well as driver licence renewals.
The service was created to ease the process of applying for vehicle driving licences and to combat corruption by “eliminating the manipulation of processes by unscrupulous officials,” according to the RTMC.
Spokesperson Simon Zwane said the current process was fraught with corruption as officials at licensing centres had an incentive to withhold available booking slots for those willing to pay for them.
“The solution will benefit the public by promoting efficient service delivery, removing barriers to access, eliminating fraud and corruption and optimising business operations,” he said.
“It is also going to save time and money used by applicants to travel to various licensing centres to secure bookings.”
This as prospective applicants will be able to determine the date, time and place where they wish to take their tests and can finalise their pre-bookings in five to ten minutes themselves, through the online app.
The current process requires applicants to queue for between 140 to 180 minutes at a testing station.
Zwane pointed out that the new application would also allow licensing centre managers to better prepare for volumes of expected applicants and allocate resources accordingly.
The new system will be launched in Gauteng later this month before it is gradually expanded to other parts of the country.
